Two Events in March

Well, here we are in the thick of Winter, and depending on where you live, or your opinions on the season, it can be a rough time of year.
I have to share that the Jewish Poets Collective will lie dormant for the month of February, just as so much of the world around us does. But have no fear (this metaphor continues) as I am hard at work just like our flower bulbs under the ground, working on future plans for the JPC.
Looking forward to March, I do have two events planned for March, and I hope you’ll save the dates, because they are going to be great.

On Tuesday, March 4, from 7-8PM ET, Eric Ranaan Fischman will give a reading, via Zoom. Eric is a Colorado based poet, and here’s his bio from his website:
Eric Raanan Fischman is an MFA graduate of Naropa University’s Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics in Colorado. He is a board member and instructor for Beyond Academia Free Skool, which hosts monthly writing workshops at the Boulder Public Library as well as a 1-2 week free summer program, and has also taught for Crestone Poemfest, the Firehouse Art Center in Longmont, and Mi Chantli in Boulder. His work has appeared in Bombay Gin, Denver Quarterly, the Boulder Weekly newspaper, New Feathers Anthology, Twenty Bellows, Voicemail Poems, Mountain Bluebird magazine, and many more. In 2023, he was one of two winners of Denver Quarterly’s annual broadside competition, with 60 copies letterpressed and a facsimile reprinted in the journal. He curates the Boulder/Denver metro area poetry calendar at boulderpoetryscene.com, and for the past few years has worked as assistant to Naropa’s Summer Writing Program director. His first book, Mordy Gets Enlightened, was published through The Little Door in 2017 and reissued by Turnsol Editions in 2021.

I first heard Eric’s work at the poetry reading I organized for the Elul Poetry Reading Challenge and was, and still am, in awe of the raw power of his words. You definitely won’t want to miss this! You can register here:

March is Women’s History Month, so in honor of this, I have scheduled a poetry reading for Sunday, March 16, 7pm ET titled Her Verse, Her Story: Four Women Poets featuring the following poets:
Lisa Bernstein, Susan Comninos, Lauren Martin, and Donna Spruijt-Metz.

Lisa Bernstein is not only a poet, but also a jazz singer who often puts her poetry to music. Her book, God in her Ruffled Dress, was one I featured during the Elul Poetry Reading Challenge, and I am excited to hear her read her work out loud as so many of her poems are infused with a jazz sensibility.

Her book can be purchased directly from her website, https://lisabmusic.com/#god-in-her-ruffled-dress-new-poetry-book-audiobook and Bookshop.org

Susan Comninos lives in New York and is the author of a debut book of poems, Out of Nowhere (SFA/Texas A&M, 2022). Her poetry has appeared in the Harvard Review Online, Rattle, The Common, Prairie Schooner and North American Review, among others.
Her book of beautiful, meditative poetry can be purchased on Bookshop.org, and via Texas A&M Press: https://www.tamupress.com/book/9781622882373/out-of-nowhere/

Lauren Martin is an Oakland, CA based psychotherapist and poet whose latest book, The Night of the Hawk, which won a 2024 BookFest award, and covers a wide range of topics including her experiences in shamanism and the Ifa religion. https://www.laurenmartin.net

Her book can be purchased on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Donna Spruijt-Metz’s poetry and translations have been published widely, and her book, General Release from the Beginning of the World, was published in 2023, the same year Poets & Writers featured her as a 5 over 50 debut author. Donna is a professor emeritus of Psychology, and lives in California. You can buy her book at bookshop.org
